Ottawa born and educated (and Halifax and Toronto), Ryan lives in the UK at, and only insofar as, Her Majesty’s pleasure and convenience. After taking a bachelor of biology at Carleton University he moved to historical study and finagled a bachelor of history at the same institution. An overall attention to the history of science is present through much of his work (if Victorian race theory can be called ‘science’). He wrote his MA in history at York University where he focused on race, class, and the British army in the slave-era Caribbean. He is currently writing his PhD in history at the University of Exeter in what he is led to understand is the cute part of England. He studies the various ways that societies have projected their identities onto the military and uses military history as a window back onto historical cultures.
